Mercedes-Benz EQB Review

The verdict on the EQB 300 and 350: Quick, sensible, useful, and comfortable, these compact luxury electric SUVs feature attractive, well-executed designs with just enough style. However, they are missing some common features expected in today’s SUVs. Despite this, they remain appealing to those seeking a streamlined yet comfortable experience.

The stylish and powerful Mercedes-EQ sub-brand has revorevolutionized electric car market. We’ve already seen the impressive EQS luxury sedan, the EQE mid-size car, and the EQS full-size luxury SUV; now, the EQB compact SUV has entered the fray as the latest addition to Mercedes-Benz’s electric range. Based on the already-existing GLB model and heavily modified to accommodate an electric powertrain, the EQB still offers the option of five- or seven-seat accommodation. But the biggest surprise is how good the EQB is to drive and use – Mercedes-Benz has gone above and beyond to ensure a top-notch driving experience. With the EQB, Mercedes-Benz has again demonstrated its commitment to delivering cutting-edge electric car technology.

The EQB’s look is immediately familiar—there have only been subtle changes to the front and rear styling during its transformation into an electric vehicle, complemented by the addition of exclusive colours and wheel designs. The EQB retains its iconic appearance while ushering in a new era of modern mobility. The intent was to make the EQB appear as if it were just an average gas-powered SUV; it’s only once you take note of the distinctively styled front grille with Mercedes-EQ’s signature new lighting strip that the EQB’s differences become apparent. With its refined and distinctive features, the EQB combines modernity and classic design perfectly.

The Mercedes-EQ EQE and EQS sedans look conventional and comfortable – not swoopy or science-fiction. It’s an ideal introduction to EVs for someone considering switching from a traditional Mercedes-Benz. This vehicle offers a reassuring and familiar transition to an all-electric alternative, making it perfect for those looking for an accessible, professional way to go electric.

Interior

Step into the upright cabin of the Mercedes-Benz EQB, and you’ll be amazed by its near-identical interior compared to its gas-powered GLB counterpart. Out of all of Mercedes-Benz’s compact offerings, such as the space-challenged GLA, the formal roofline of the GLB and EQB undeniably creates a much more spacious interior. Besides excellent visibility outside and a comfortable and tall driving position, the EQB is adorned with generous headroom, legroom and hip room across its first and second rows of seats. And while there is also an optional two-seat third row- an ideal convenience for families who might use the EQB as emergency soccer-team transport- most can skip it as it is still only suitable for children. The EQB is designed not just to look luxurious inside and out but also to be comfortable. The second row of seats can slide forward and back, making it easier to access the many features and technologies the EQB offers. The EQB has the previous generation of Mercedes’ MBUX multimedia system for those seeking the newest technology. This state-of-the-art system provides all the features and convenience of the latest version at a fraction of the cost. Enjoy the modern luxury of the EQB today. Typically, we are inclined to the most recent and advanced functions. However, the former method is the superior choice. It is simpler to use, with less data loading and is managed with switches and buttons, not capacitive touch sensors (on the console). This detail should be noticed when making your decision.

The EQB’s interior offers a truly luxurious experience, granted by the satisfying tactile feedback of its buttons and switches. Though it may not be quite as modern as MBUX screens, the 10.25-inch digital gauge cluster and accompanying 10.25-inch central touchscreen perform well and are situated in an accessible, ergonomic way. Additionally, they are less prone to causing user frustration than the newer system. Altogether, the EQB’s little details provide a luxurious experience that many of Mercedes’ recent offerings can’t compete with.

The Ultimate Driving Machine

With two flavours: the EQB 300 4Matic and the EQB 350 4Matic, you can experience premium all-wheel drive performance. The 300 delivers a combined output of 225 horsepower and 288 pounds-feet of torque, while the 350 provides a whopping 288 hp and 384 pounds-feet of torque, all powered by a 70.5-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack. Plus, with an EPA-estimated driving range for the 2022 EQB 300 of 243 miles and 227 miles for the EQB 350, the Mercedes-Benz EQB is the perfect all-wheel-drive performance vehicle with ample range. The all-wheel-drive Tesla Model Y Long Range offers an impressive EPA-estimated range of 330 miles, setting the new benchmark for electric vehicle range. For those looking for an alternative, the single-motor configuration of the new Audi Q4 e-Tron is rated for 265 miles and with the added all-wheel-drive, it offers 236 miles of range to boot. This selection of vehicles provides drivers with a reliable, efficient means of transport with Reduced Emission Capability. Experience the world of Mercedes-Benz and see where the EQB can take you.

Pricing

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQB went on sale last year, and 2023 models are available at dealerships now. The starting price for my test vehicle, including delivery, was $55,550, which is competitive with options from other brands like Audi’s Q4 e-Tron and Volkswagen’s ID.4. Interestingly, Tesla’s newly-reduced Model Y pricing starts below that of the EQB 300, likely giving some buyers pause due to its superior performance and range plus access to the automaker’s Supercharger network. Later this year, another potential competitor will be the 2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV, with a size advantage and a more accessible price tag, but not with the same level of luxury as the EQB. My EQB had a few optional features such as heated front seats, a panoramic moonroof, and a portable charging cable, bringing the price up to $57,650—yet still without standard luxuries like keyless entry. This highlights the importance of paying close attention to trims, options, and packages when purchasing.

Between the two models, I’d choose the EQB 300. Its more powerful motors in the EQB 350 boost power, but the tradeoff of the reduced estimated range isn’t worth it. The EQB SUV presents an intriguing option compared to a Tesla Model Y; however, providing a comfortable, stylish, and practical interior. While it can’t quite match the Model Y on range or performance, those looking for something other than a Tesla should consider the EQB.
